Quintus Volusius (prefect)
Quintus Volusius〔(Romeins Imperium – Lucius Quintus Volusius Saturninus translated from Dutch to English )〕 also known as Q. Volusius Saturninus and Volusius Saturninus〔(Genealogy of Volusius Saturninus by D.C. O’Driscoll )〕 was a politician of the Roman Republic who lived in the 1st century BC.
Little is known on his origins however, Volusius was originally from the city of Feronia, also known as Lucus Feroniae in Etruria.〔(Romeins Imperium – Lucius Quintus Volusius Saturninus translated from Dutch to English )〕 He came from an ancient and distinguished Senatorial family, that never rose above the Praetorship. Volusius was of eques status.〔(Genealogy of Volusius Saturninus by D.C. O’Driscoll )〕
Volusius was a pupil of the Roman statesman Cicero in oratory.〔(Quintus Volusius no.2 article at ancient library )〕 He accompanied Cicero to Cilicia, where he held office under him.〔(Quintus Volusius no.2 article at ancient library )〕 While in Cilicia, Volusius served as a Prefect under Cicero in 51 BC to 50 BC.〔(Romeins Imperium – Lucius Quintus Volusius Saturninus translated from Dutch to English )〕
During his Prefectship in Cilicia, Cicero had sent to Volusius to Cyprus.〔(The Cypriot Exemption from Evocatio and the Character of Cicero’s Proconsulship by Jonathan Zarecki - 2012 )〕 When Volusius arrived on the island, he had heard and settled civil cases to a small group of Roman citizens that lived on the island. Cicero describes Volusius as a ‘man both trustworthy and extraordinarily moderate’.〔(The Cypriot Exemption from Evocatio and the Character of Cicero’s Proconsulship by Jonathan Zarecki - 2012 )〕
Volusius married a Roman noblewoman called Claudia, the daughter of Pompey’s officer, Drusus Claudius Nero, sister of Praetor Tiberius Claudius Nero who was the aunt of the Roman emperor Tiberius.〔Cicero . Ad Atticum, V, 21〕 Claudia bore Volusius one son, Lucius Volusius Saturninus〔Cicero . Ad Atticum, V, 21〕 and a daughter, Volusia Saturnina.〔(Romeins Imperium – Lucius Quintus Volusius Saturninus translated from Dutch to English )〕
